Fifth Graders Bring Their Stories to Life with Story Laurie

Fifth grade students in Mr. Falco’s and Mr. Danapilis’ classrooms enjoyed a special visit from storyteller, songwriter, and singer “Story Laurie” just before break. She spent the day working with both classes in two engaging sessions. During the morning session, Story Laurie guided students in writing a short story, encouraging them to incorporate their own descriptive words and creative ideas. In the afternoon, she returned alongside DCS music teacher Scott Hopkins, and together they brought the students’ stories to life by setting them to music.

Story Laurie’s work connects seamlessly with the fifth grade curriculum by encouraging students to explore their writing through the five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. This approach helps transform simple descriptions into immersive experiences, allowing readers to feel as though they are truly part of the story. By weaving in specific sensory details, students learn how to evoke emotion, create atmosphere, and craft more vivid narratives. Using sensory language also strengthens setting, character development, and plot.

This enriching experience at DES was made possible through Capital Region BOCES’ Arts & Enrichment/Arts in Education program.
