It was a f-i-r-s-t time that the Joe Bena Auditorium hosted Duanesburg’s School Spelling Bee, and the Jan. 10 event was a s-u-c-c-e-s-s.
Two dozen students in grades 4 through 8 participated in the bee. They spelled their way through almost 170 words before a winner was determined.
Congratulations to 1st place winner Grace DeAngelis, 2nd place finisher Matthew Newvine and 3rd place finisher Ava Pagano. Grace will represent DCS at the Regional Spelling Bee at Proctors on Feb. 14.
“I told the parents that these children all have courage for taking this leap of faith,” said DCS 6th grade teacher Spencer Falco, “a leap to something that may be difficult, and scary. The ability to step out of one’s comfort zone, especially at a young age, is something that assures me and others how bright our future really will be.”
Falco ended his talk at the spelling bee with a quote from Winston Churchill, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
