May 19, 2009 –
Duanesburg Central School District students are collecting
aluminum tabs in memory of Victor Armstead, a Catskill High
School senior who died in a car accident earlier this
spring.
Armstead was a member of the Catskill school’s Friends of
Rachel’s Challenge club, which is an offshoot of Rachel's
Challenge—a nationally recognized program that came out of
the Columbine shooting and focuses on kindness and
compassion. He was spearheading a tab collection to benefit
Shriner’s Hospital before he died. His goal was to collect
enough tabs to fill the school principal’s pick-up truck.
In an effort to fulfill Victor’s goal despite his passing,
Catskill school officials reached out to school districts
throughout the Capital Region to help.
So far, Duanesburg students have filled more than two
one-gallon water coolers with pull-tabs of all kinds,
including beverage and soup cans.
The tabs are collected because it is the only pure aluminum
part of a can, and aluminum has resale value. The cans can
still be returned for the deposit even after the tab has
been removed.
Community members are encouraged to participate by bringing
tabs in to the middle/high school or elementary school main
offices by May 28.
On May 30, all of the collected tabs from participating
schools will be emptied into the truck.
Once the hospital receives the tabs, they will sell them to
recycling plants for 50 to 70 cents per pound. The proceeds
will be used for programs and services that directly benefit
patients and their families.
