Elementary school celebrates Veterans Day
In November, the Duanesburg Elementary School held a Veteran’s Day assembly to honor local veterans. The program featured guest speaker Chief Master Sergeant Michael Kovarovik from the United States Air Force who delivered a message to the student body about the importance of integrity.
The students sang the U.S. Armed Force Medley and the local veterans stood when their branch of service song was sung. Elementary students also performed a song called “You are Our Heroes” with vocal soloists and grade 5 instrumentalists on oboe and flute accompanying the song. A moment of silence was held after TAPS was performed by Mr. Norman Miller, also a veteran from the Air Force.
The Student Council collected items for the “Wounded Warrior Ministry” for soldiers injured and recuperating in Germany. The students and faculty also collected more than $200 to pay for shipping costs for the Wounded Warrior Ministry. Following the assembly, the veterans and their family members enjoyed refreshments donated by Dunkin Donuts and Panera Bread.
"The sense of pride and honor for our veterans made this a very special assembly," said Music Teacher Marie-Clare Waltz.
