DCS Senior receives athletic scholarship from Binghamton University
November 17, 2010—Surrounded by his Wrestling Coach Joe Bena, his parents, and DCS Athletic Director Penny Hardenstine, Senior Nick Gwiazdowski received a round of applause and congratulations from peers, community members, and DCS faculty as he signed a letter of intent to attend Binghamton University in the fall of 2011 on an athletic/wrestling scholarship.
"This feels really good," says Nick. "All the hard work is paying off. I'm so appreciative of the support and encourage from my parents and my coaches, and everyone who has helped make all of this happen."
Nick, who has been wrestling since second grade, was named the 2010 Division II State Champion for his weight class. In 2009, he was ranked third in the state. He became interested in wrestling after watching his neighbors and cousins compete at their wrestling matches.
"Nick is going to be a tremendous addition to the wrestling team at Binghamton University," says Wrestling Coach Joe Bena. "I know he will work just as hard there as he has here--we are all so proud of him."
Although wrestling is a winter sport at DCS High School, Nick never takes a break. He wrestles year round through various wrestling clubs.
"I love it," says Nick. "I never tire of it, and I can't wait to wrestle at Binghamton!"
Nick, who has an average of 88, is still deciding what to study at Binghamton. "I'm looking into the business program," he says. "But I'm still thinking about it. Binghamton is a great school so I know I will figure it out."
