I thought there was suppose to be a class picture included in the ismile packets we received? Was this not the case because it did say that was the case on the order form?

Response heading

The elementary school will be getting a class picture. The iSmile organization prefers to include the retake pictures in the class composite. The re-takes were done recently, so parents should be seeing those shortly.

Where is the student handbook form located on the website?

Response heading

The 2011-12 Student Handbook and the signature sheet can be found on both middle school and high school homepages. It can also be found on the publications webpage.

Why do some questions/comments not get posted?

Response heading

The Eagle's Nest was created to provide people a place to pose their questions or comments that will help the district dispel rumors or other inaccurate information that may be circulating through the community.

Some questions and comments/personal opinions are not suitable for this public page. For example, we will NOT answer questions or post comments regarding individuals by name or questions/comments deemed to be inappropriate or inflammatory. We also will NOT publish comments that are inappropriate for a public setting. Some questions will not be answered.

For individual or private concerns, please contact the school or district office directly. If you would like to have a discussion about a particular issue, please direct your concerns to the appropriate individual. If you do not know who to contact regarding your concern, please refer to the Effective Communications Guideline web page to help direct you.

Why aren't school and community programs held in the Duanesburg Area Community Center on the weekends?

Response heading

The district forms partnership with the DACC wherever possible and when there are mutual benefits.

Do all of the teachers have an e-mail address? I have e-mailed a few teachers but never received a response.

Response heading

All teachers do have e-mail addresses. If you do not receive a response from the teacher you emailed, please contact the building principal to set up a phone conversation with the teacher.

Why would a question be posted, answered, then removed from the Eagle's Nest?

Response heading

Eagle's Nest questions and responses are eventually archived. See the bottom of this page for an index.

I have not received any emails from the school notifier recently. Is any thing wrong?

Response heading

No, SNN is working.

I've met quite a few families in the area that home school and do a great job. I also know the teachers do a great job. Has the district ever done a count of how many families in the area home school their children? Is there a program or outreach to those families if they would like to connect or collaborate with schools on projects or events?

Response heading

Yes, we do keep a record of how many students in our district are home schooled. By law, parents who home school their children are required to submit all of their documentation for district approval and meet the required mandates. The district does not collaborate with parents that are home schooling their children, nor do their children participate in school activities or sports. Link to the Home Instruction Policy 8441.

Why is the Fall Carnival sign still up at the intersection in Duanesburg by Stewarts? The event was held on Sept. 26, I think the sign should have been removed a long time ago.

Response heading

The person in charge of the carnival sign is planning to have it removed soon. She went to remove it herself, but it turns out the sign is much heavier and more cumbersome than it looks. She is in the process of getting someone to help her remove it. Your patience is appreciated.

When will the parent portal be completely up and running? Currently, for some classes you can look at homework and quizzes, but for others only the marking period average is available.

Response heading

The portal is completely up and running. If a teacher does not have any assignments posted, the parent should contact that particular teacher directly. All teachers in grades 6-12 should be posting all assignments to the portal regularly.

The FBI-SOS program sounds great but what if one has a dial-up internet connection at home and it's difficult to access the program because of that?

Response heading

Many public libraries and community centers have computers with high-speed internet that are available for community use. Additionally, children will be using school computers in class or during computer-specific training lessons to access this site and participate in the program.

Last year the senior class sold discount cards to local establishments. Is anyone selling those cards this year?

Response heading

This fundraiser did not have the financial benefit that the class had hoped and, as a result, no other groups or classes have opted to take it on.

Why are some questions not answered? I sent a question a few days ago but it has not been answered.

Response heading

Eagle's Nest questions are e-mailed to our district's communications specialist and directed to the person who could best answer the question. The answer will be posted once the response has been received by the communications specialist, which is why some responses may take longer than others.

If a question has been asked that was already asked in the past, it will not be answered again. All previously asked questions and responses are filed in the archives which are located at the  bottom of the page.

Please note that some questions and comments are not suitable for this public page. For example, we will not answer questions or post comments or complaints regarding individuals by name, or questions deemed to be inappropriate or inflammatory. Some questions will not be answered. For individual or private concerns, we urge you to contact the school or district office directly. If you do not know who to contact regarding your concern, please refer to the "effective communications guideline" Web page to help direct you. Thank you for your consideration.

I have a child who has attended DCS since kindergarten and is now in high school, but we've never received a newsletter or district calendar in the mail? Can you please tell me how I can be put on a mailing list?

Response heading

We are sorry that you are not on the district's mailing list. We do our best to keep it up to date. Please contact the Secretary to the Superintendent Mrs. Jeanne Beach to be added to the district mailing list. She can be reached at jbeach@duanesburg.org or at 895-5350 ext. 241

Can middle/high school students come in before school starts to put supplies in their lockers? Also, will high school students have the same locker assignment as last year?

Response heading

Yes, both high school and middle school students can come to school earlier than the first day to put supplies in their lockers. High school students have the same lockers from 9th grade through12th grade. Middle school students, however, are assigned new lockers for the coming school year. During homeroom on the first day of school, middle school students will receive their locker assignments and combinations. However, students can stop by the main office to receive their locker assignments and combinations prior to the start of school.

I'm interested in knowing how much the district paid for the parent portal? There is no up-to-date information on the portal, no report cards or past marking period information.

Response heading

The Parent Portal is a free service through the E-school Student Management System. The portal is updated regularly. For instance, once report card and progress report data is entered into the e-school system, the Parent Portal also gets updated. Please note, the district can only post the most recent progress reports and report cards. Other information that can be obtained is your child's immunization chart, schedule, attendance record, and a calendar of school events.

Letters about how to register and access the system were sent home with middle/high school students in February 2010. You will need your child’s student identification number, which is listed on report cards.

If you have any questions or need your child’s identification number, please contact Lucas Larkin at 518-895-5350, ext. 268.

Who writes the "Soaring Eagle" newsletter that goes home to families?

Response heading

Are kids entering 6th grade going to be given their locker assignments/combinations before school starts, and will they have a day to try them out?

Response heading

Incoming 6th graders are invited to come to the school on August 24 to receive their lockers assignments and  combinations, as well as practice getting into their lockers. Additionally, students will be given a little extra time over the first few days of school to become to their lockers/combinations. A letter was mailed home the week of August 9 with information regarding incoming grade 6 students.

Why are the questions on the Eagle's Nest edited from the original question?

Response heading

They aren't always edited. Some are edited because they might need extra text so others understand the questions better. At other times, names or inappropriate comments need to be removed. Please refer to the top of this page for Eagle's Nest guidelines.

Who is actually responsible for the answers that are posted to questions for the Eagle's Nest?

Response heading

Eagle's Nest feedback is e-mailed to the district's communications specialist and then directed to the people who can best answer the questions. The answers are posted by the communications specialist once the responses are received, which is why some responses may take longer than others.

Why is it that some of the questions after a day or so are chopped in half? I have noticed this in the past, as well as this past week.

Response heading

Eagle's Nest questions and responses are listed on this main page, and can be seen using the scroll bar to the right. When the length of the Q&A section gets too long, they are filed by subject, and can be accessed via links listed in the archive box at the bottom of this page. Many questions submitted to the Eagle's Nest are reworded to either make them more concise, correct grammar, and/or remove inappropriate commentary or staff names.

I know the deadline for ordering Eagles spirit wear was May 27, but is there a way for me to view and purchase a hooded sweatshirt with the Eagles logo?

Response heading

The Eagles spirit wear order was, indeed, closed on May 27. However, please contact the PTSO at ptso@duanesburg.org to find out if ordering after the deadline is a possibility.

I was just wondering what happened to all the old senior class photos that used to hang in the front hall. Why were they taken down and where were they moved to? They were quite entertaining to look at.

Response heading

The photos are currently being re-sized and re-framed to give them a more consistent and professional appearance. They will be hung again once complete.

Are teachers supposed to swear?

Response heading

It is expected that all staff members use appropriate language throughout their interactions with and around students.

When the new addition opened up in September '01, a breathtaking sign was installed over the MOCC with the following encouraging words painted upon it: "To be a socially responsible school community where learning and the pursuit of excellence is valued." Has the grammatical error ever been fixed?

Response heading

Yes.

Where did the name Dusquanox come from. Is it created from the names of the local communities the school system serves?

Response heading

Dusquanox is indeed a composite name of local communitiesDuanesburg, Quaker Street and Knox. It's the same for Delanson, which is a composite name of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Companies.

Are there any plans to start a recycle center at the schools? A lot of paper is shredded, but then just thrown away. Is there any way to do this?

Response heading

Both the elementary school and middle/high school's already recycle paper through a community recycling program, called Green Fiber. There is also a recycling company that takes cans, plastic and glass.

Do you know the origin of this "haunted story":http://theshadowlands.net/places/newyork.htm
Duanesburg Central School - There have been two deaths at the High school. Since then there have been doors that slam by themselves, odd noises, and many orbs have been
caught on camera, especially in the gymnasium. Also at weekend sports practices, students have claimed to see a figure run by the windows in the hallways.

Response heading

In the 1970s, a high school teacher died of natural causes in the gymnasium. We do not have a record of a second death in our schools. However, none of our school buildings, to the best of our knowledge, are haunted.
