Why is it so cold in the school?

Response heading

Is there a head maintenance person for the high school? If so, what are the odds of getting someone to mow more frequently? If you look at other schools, those soccer fields are nicely mowed and the front lawns are manicured.

Response heading

Yes, we have three employees in our buildings and grounds department who maintain the fields. All of the athletic fields are mowed, in general, on a weekly basis. The upper soccer fields, which are currently not in use by athletic teams, were left to go to seed in an effort to allow for additional grass growth. Once that occurred, the fields were put back on a weekly mow schedule. However, in order to avoid grass burn from the summer sun, soccer fields are mowed when the grass is typically four inches high, until the fields are in use in the fall.

My daughter is in the High School and says that it is so cold in her classes that she is shivering and has to breathe on her hands and rub them together to keep them warm. I believe that the temperatures should be checked in the rooms. There is no reason the kids should be so cold in school. She has been wearing several layers to school each day to try and keep warm.

Response heading

Temperature preferences vary greatly among individuals. There is no one temperature that can satisfy everyone, which is why most classroom temperatures are set at around 70 degrees. However, individuals who feel the temperature does not fall within this range are encouraged to talk to their classroom teacher, who will notify the building principal. In turn, maintenance personnel will visit the complaint area, verify that the HVAC system is working properly, monitor temperatures and make adjustments as needed.

The district recently joined Capital Region BOCES' new energy management service in an effort to determine where energy is being used efficiently and where it can be reduced. An energy educator has been assigned to the district, and will monitor classroom temperatures as well as other areas to increase energy efficiency.

A problem we all have been dying to know is why are the hallways and some classrooms so cold... the students have been told to dress warmer, but there is only so much they can do. I personally have heard from many students that the school hallways are cold even with layers of clothes I believe this because I have walked into the school myself and had layers of clothes on and was freezing so what is there to be done about the cold temperatures of the school?

Response heading

Hallways temperatures have been lowered to around 65 degrees to conserve energy. However, the vestibules are colder - around 55 degrees. Most classrooms are regulated at 70 degrees, with the gym, MOCC and some larger rooms at 68 degrees.

As a student, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how cold it has to be outside before the middle/high school will have heat in all of the classrooms?

Response heading

The heat is currently set at approximately 70 degrees in most classrooms. If a specific classroom is uncomfortable, please notify the building principal so that maintenance personnel can verify everything is working properly.

Apparently a sink fell off the wall in a third grade bathroom and injured a student. Have you determined why this occurred and whether precautions are warranted in other bathrooms with sinks installed similarly?

Response heading

It appears the incident occurred after an inappropriate amount of weight was placed on the sink. However, because student safety is of the utmost concern, maintenance personnel have checked and caulked all other sinks at the elementary school as a precautionary measure.

If there was $8-10 thousand dollars spent on the new sound system for the gym/auditorium, where did all of that money go? The sound quality at sporting events and school ceremonies makes it extremely hard to understand anything being said.

Response heading

There was recently some difficulty with the speakers for the sound system, which has resulted in poor sound quality. This has been addressed by maintenance personnel.

Can you give me any information regarding the grant that the school received to refurbish the business office?

Response heading

The $100,000 project is being funded using monies remaining from the district's 2005 and 2007 capital bond projects, and did not affect the 2009-10 tax levy or tax rate increase. It is not being funded through a grant. The project is not meant to refurbish the district office. It is to construct offices for special education and technology staff and equipment within the district office building. The new space will be used to safely store all technological equipment in a centralized, more secure and energy-efficient space. It will also free up classroom space at the elementary school and middle/high school.
