Is the grade 7 literary magazine going to be added to the clubs and activities anytime in the future?
![]()
The 7th grade literacy magazine is not an after-school club and, therefore, will not be added to the list. Seventh-grade students who are interested in participating should contact the coordinator, English teacher Ms. Meyer. Other students who are interested in an after-school club/activity this is focused on writing are encouraged to get involved in the school newspaper. For more information about the school newspaper, please contact the advisor Ms. Pamela Jackson at pjackson@duanesburg.org.

What are auditions for the Select Choir like? What needs to be done in order to get in?
![]()
A student trying out for select choir is asked to prepare a song that he or she feels demonstrates the best qualities of his or her voice. Students are also asked to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" in a capella. Students have to do sing backs where Music Teacher Mira Ordon plays notes on the piano in different patterns and students have to repeat with their voice. Two songs that students sing in choir for warm ups are "Sing Legato" and "Flexibility" which are used to assess tone quality and pitch accuracy. For more information, please contact Mira Ordon directly at mordon@duanesburg.org.

Is it possible for Duanesburg to supply transportation for ski club this year?
![]()
The ski club is not a district-run program anymore. In the past when the district ran the program, transportation was provided and the cost of the program was built into the budget.

What grade level is drama club open to?
![]()
This year, Drama Club is open to students in grades 6 through 12. Grade-level requirements typically depend on the musical the club chooses to perform. This year the club is producing the musical "Oliver," and, therefore, needs middle school students to play workhouse kids and pick-pocketers.

Why is there not a tryout for kids to move up from modified to JV sport teams? It's not fair to the kids not to even be given a chance.

A coach may recommend that a seventh through twelfth-grade student go through the selection classification process, as established by the New York State Public High School Association. The process was established to determine a student’s readiness to compete in interscholastic athletic competition by evaluating their maturity, fitness and skill. A student may become eligible to try-out for a particular sport. However, it does not guarantee participation on a team. For more information, refer to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Selective/Classification Handbook (PDF).

Why aren’t the modified sports teams invited to the end of the season sports banquets? They are expected to sell the raffle tickets that are provided by the Booster Club but they are not included in the event that this money is used for and they are athletes as well! Also the modified teams should NOT be treated as inferior to the JV and Varsity. They are our future JV and varsity teams.

Students participating in modified sports throughout the school year are honored at the end of the year during an event held specifically for modified student-athletes. The two award banquets are held separately to ensure all students receive the congratulations and recognition they deserve.

What is the situation with the modified wrestling coach? He has not been present for a few weeks now and I was informed by my child that there is finally a replacement? It would have been nice if the parents were made aware of the situation, a phone call, letter etc, instead of being left in the dark.

A new modified wrestling coach, Michael Walpole, was appointed by the board on Jan. 19. A letter was sent home to parents of modified wrestlers on Jan. 12 to inform them of the impending change. During the transition from the previous coach to Walpole, students continued to attend practice and meets as usual with the assistance of varsity wrestling coach Joe Bena and jv wrestling coach Justin Kimball in an effort to minimize any disruption.

Is the athletic department paying two coaches for Varsity Cheerleading? If so, why?
![]()
Yes, the varsity cheerleading squad now includes a head coach and an assistant coach, who previously served as head coach for the JV cheerleading squad. There is not a JV cheerleading squad this year. According to the district's director of physical education, the assistant position has been beneficial since the league approved an increase in the number of cheerleaders allowed on the floor at once. The assistant coach is able to provide additional support during this transition and the subsequent level of difficulty that it entails.

If a student is in two after-school programs at the same time, why does one program take priority over the other?
![]()
Typically, students are not enrolled in two after-school programs. However, students may be allowed to participate in two after-school programs dependent on the activity and level of conflict between the programs. For example, a student may be involved in both athletics and drama club. But once the student reaches the varsity level, they must commit to one program.
Additionally, if a student is involved in a school-based program, such as athletics, and another program that is not school-based, such as swim lessons, the school-based program would take priority.

My son signed up for modified soccer, I completed all the necessary forms and I was told that the coach would be contacting/e-mailing each student prior to starting.... needless to say this did not happen. On the first day of school he was told by a classmate that soccer had already started. Does this happen often?

Unfortunately there has been some confusion and miscommunication about the fall sports season due in part to the transition to a new athletic director. Coaches are encouraged to contact players prior to the season, but they are under no obligation to do so. Modified soccer did not start until the first day of school this year, and students were welcome to join the team after the start of school. All student-athletes and their parents are encouraged to attend the Fall Meet the Coaches Night, which was held in late August to learn more about the upcoming sports season directly from coaches.

Why are fall sports practices run throughout the day prior to school starting? Many parents work and transportation is difficult - practices are after school hours once school is in session - why can't this be done at the start of the season?
![]()
Athletic practices begin early because students are required to participate in a set number of practice sessions before they can be eligible for competition. For example, soccer players must complete ten practice sessions before they may compete in their first game. Competitions cannot be pushed back because it would interfere with the winter sports season, and the schedule cannot be made more compact because of the required rest time in between games. These processes are regulated by the state and leave little room for alterations or interpretation.

I was wondering if the 5th grade play was always just the choir students? I had thought it was the whole 5th grade class.

The fifth-grade play involves students in chorus who volunteered to try out. Not all 5th grade chorus members tried out, but there are about 30 students who are involved with the play and production.

How is it possible that the Board of Education be considering adding Football to the district's sports program when the district is already being forced to make cuts in existing program due to cuts in state aid. Even if the district only picks up the cost of transportation (with fundraising covering other costs) it seems that other less costly items that have been cut (such as field trips and the 4:00 late bus) should be added back into the budget before new programs are considered.

The Board of Education Education Committee met with the Pop Warner Organization upon their request to hear their proposal. No decisions have been made at this time nor will they without community input.
The district will be holding a series of public budget forums in late February to solicit community input about the budget as the district enters what is expected to be the most difficult budget season in recent memory. Learn more.
