February 2012: Mary Neitzel

Mary was selected as the February Spotlight because her peers say she is an amazingly dedicated teacher and wonderful mentor to her fellow teachers. She works very hard and always knows just what the kids need. She also is always happy to be at work. "We love and respect her dearly in the elementary school," says one colleague.

What classes/grade levels do you teach?
I teach in grades two, four and five this year. The grade levels I work with change from year to year depending on where students' needs require support for individual or small group attention. This definitely keeps my job interesting because I get to teach math and reading to students in different grade levels and in partnership with superb classroom teachers.

When you were in high school, what did you want to be when you "grew up?"

At first, I thought I’d like to be a psychologist or social worker. Then, during a pre-career experience, I had a chance to work as a tutor in other elementary schools in my home district. I found that I loved helping students find ways to become more successful and come to know themselves as learners. That’s when I realized that I wanted to be a teacher who focuses on skill development with students who experience challenges in learning.

Where did you go to college and what was your major?

I went to SUNY Geneseo for my BS in Education, double majoring in elementary education and special education, and minoring in psychology and philosophy. I attended the College of Saint Rose for my MS in Education, majoring in Special Education/Learning Disabilities.

Why did you decide to become a teacher/administrator?

I really love kids and learning, and I feel that it’s just about the most important job there is.

What do you like most about Duanesburg schools?

I love the small community environment of this school, for starters. I also admire the staff I work with and the importance and care they place on teaching children. They are a wonderful educational family!

Where do you live?

I live in Altamont with my husband, Oakley, and my two daughters.

Do you coach any sports, run after-school clubs or special programs, or volunteer anywhere?

I volunteer for Skye Farm Camp in the Adirondacks, for Habitat for Humanity, and at my church. I also teach GRASP in the spring to students in fourth or fifth grade. I’m also on a lot of committees.

What activity do you enjoy most in your free time?

I LOVE to read, cook and cycle.

What is your greatest accomplishment so far?

I’d have to say being a part of my family! It’s wonderful, hard work to be a mom, wife, daughter, sister and aunt.

Who's your hero?

My mom is my hero. She’s so smart and so fair, and did such a great job raising four children. She has always been a volunteer for her family and church. She still is amazing!

What is your favorite book?

The Solace of Leaving Early, by Haven Kimmel, and anything else that she or Anne Lamott write. I also love To Kill a Mockingbird, The Trumpet of the Swan, and Blueberries for Sal.

Who are your top three favorite bands/musical artists?

I have an eclectic taste in music. For example, I like Matt Kearney, Dar Williams and Lady Gaga--as well as everything in between those artists.

What is your favorite food?

I love good food that is well- prepared, such as grilled salmon with sautéed spinach and roasted sweet potatoes or Brussels sprouts.

What is your favorite Website?

www.eatright.org.

What makes you laugh?

Lots of things…kids, friends, my silly mistakes, but especially my husband. He is a SERIOUSLY funny guy, and it’s one of the things I love most about him.
