Duanesburg students win Regional Envirothon competition

On April 28, 2011, a team of students from Mrs. McKinley's UHS Environmental Studies class won the Regional Envirothon competition for Schenectady county.

"I am proud to be a Duanesburg High School student," said Nolan McHugh a member of the team.

The program is designed to be a hands-on outdoor competition for high school students interested in natural resource conservation and environmental issues. The competition includes tests of the students’ knowledge of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current environmental issues. Each year a different environmental issue is selected for the competition. This year's focus was on "Salt and Fresh Water Estuaries" and the potential effects of climate change.

"The day was rainy and the ground was muddy but the students were not phased and did not falter," says McKinley. "They got to truly experience of what it is like to work outdoors."

Caitlin Gurney said: "The weather was bad, but I like mud so it worked to our advantage."

More competition wins

The Middle School Environmental Study Team from the Schoharie River Center, which includes Duanesburg Middle School students Maeve McKeeby, Xavier McKinley and Jackie Smith, took first place in the middle school competition.

The High School Environmental Study Team, which includes Duanesburg High School students Mike Brosnan, Caitlin Gurney, Nick Leveillee, Kyle Mullen and Sam Rokos will compete in the NY State competition on May 25 and 26 at Hobart & William Smith College in Geneva, NY.
