Mastermind team gears up for competitions
December 2010—With one competition down and four more to go, this year's mastermind team is hitting the books! This year's team is made up of nearly 20 high school students ranging in grades 9 through 12. The team's first competition was Dec. 2 against Mohonasen High School. The remaining competitions are Jan. 6 at South Colonie High School, Feb. 3 at Watervliet High School, and Mar. 3 at Guilderland High School.
Masterminds is a fast-paced, question-and-answer competition
for high school students. "It's the high school version of the former GE College
Bowl," explains Mastermind Advisor Maureen Rynish.
MasterMinds uses a form of the NAQT™ Quiz Bowl format for match play. Matches are played in eight-minute halves with each school playing four students at a time. Students must ring-in and be recognized before answering. Correct answers earn that player’s team ten points and the opportunity for the team for answer a bonus question.
The questions cover a broad range: art, biology, chemistry, current events, geography, history, literature, music, political science, pop culture, religion and sports.
This year's DCS team members are Alana Aho, Hannah Barr, Clayre Caraher, Zach Fields, Montana Fisher, Alyssa Galea, Emily Galea, Caitlin Gurney, Nora Kanarkowicz, Katie Loret, Nick Lynch, Zach McKeeby, Caitlin McKinley, Ryan Murphy, Noel Savoy, Ail Soucy and Anna Winters.
