Penny Hardenstine named new middle school principal

August  2010—The Board of Education and Duanesburg faculty and staff kindly welcome Ms. Penny Hardenstine, the new middle school principal and athletic director, to the district.

Hardenstine comes to Duanesburg from the Bethlehem School District where she was a high school dean. Prior to that she was an assistant principal in the Saratoga School District and held administrative positions in large districts in Connecticut and California.

She also taught physical education for seven years at a K-12 BOCES in Elmira, NY.

Hardenstine earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education/sports medicine from Lockhaven University in Pennsylvania, her Master’s degree from Elmira College and her administrative certification from SUNY Albany.

"Penny’s physical education background and administrative experience makes her the perfect fit for our district and our goal to have a middle school principal who can also manage the athletic director position," says Superintendent Chris Crowley.

The first thing Hardenstine wants to do at Duanesburg is acquaint herself with the school, the community and the district’s goals.

"I’m interested in looking more closely at test scores, curriculum assessments and student achievement," says Hardenstine. In fact, her future plans include earning her doctorate in curriculum and assessment from SUNY Albany. "Student testing is important," she says, "but just as important are those who are taking the tests. I’m looking forward to getting to know the students and their parents."

Hardenstine believes in having an open door policy. "I will be very available to students and their parents—they can call or e-mail me with any questions," she adds.

Joining the Duanesburg team has allowed Hardenstine to achieve one of her life goals, which was to become a middle school principal.

"I really like working with middle school students," she says. "I love their energy and their sense of humor, and the tremendous impact that one can have on students that age. I’m very excited to be here."
