Five students competed in the regional New York State Envirothon at the New York Power Authority's Visitors Center—taking first prize. The students tested their knowledge against approximately 20 high school teams, representing Schoharie, Albany, Schenectady and Rennsselaer counties.

The hands-on competition gauges students' knowledge of aquatics, soil, forestry, wildlife, sustainability and groundwater. The students worked together to showcase their knowledge and understanding of natural resource issues by identifying plant and fish species, for example.

Representing Duanesburg in the competition were: Catherine Winters, Emily Kosinski, Bri Pucci, Nora Kanarkiewicz and Janae Vanderpoel.

The students will go on to the statewide competition, June 2-3, at Keuka College.

Montana Fisher will serve as an alternate.

Congratulations and good luck!
