Duanesburg opposes proposal to reassign school resource officers

March 29, 2010—As part of his executive state budget, Gov. David Paterson proposed to redeploy 90 state troopers who currently serve as school resource officers in school districts and assign them to road patrols. This would mean that New York State troopers, like Chip Johnstone who currently serves as Duanesburg's school resource officer, would be redeployed.

In an effort to reverse this proposal, school officials are sending letters to local legislators and are encouraging parents, staff, students and members of the community to do the same.

The SRO program is crucial for rural school districts, like Duanesburg, that have no local police department. Our school resource officer’s presence ensures that we receive the immediate response to emergencies that our students and staff need and deserve.

Trooper Johnstone can be found walking our hallways, visiting our classrooms and talking with students throughout the entire school district—providing a proactive approach for dealing with the pressures facing today’s youth. Our students see him as an advisor, a positive role model and someone they can trust to help them through difficult times.

If you oppose this measure, please join us in our letter-writing campaign to Gov. David Paterson, Senator Hugh T. Farley, local assemblyman George Amedore and the NYS Police.

Please take a few minutes to download and read the Form Letter (Word Document), then send it on to our local elected officials.
