Bus drivers visit elementary classrooms, promote safety

March 10, 2010—Bus drivers, students, parents and staff all share a responsibility to ensure students get to and from school safely every day. To further educate students about their role as safe riders, a group of bus drivers graciously volunteered to visit elementary school classes in mid February.

Throughout the day, drivers played bus safety bingo and hangman with students. The games related directly to the 2010 National School Bus Safety poster contest theme, "Be Aware: Know the Danger Zone."

The slogan emphasizes that students should cross the street, board the bus and exit the bus while staying in view of the school bus driver at all times. The danger zone is that area within 10 feet of the bus on any side.

"I am extremely proud of these exceptional people who have nothing but the best interest of the students in mind," said head bus driver Pegi Venter.

Drivers included, Phyllis Klingbeil (bus route #8), Mary Micheli (#3), Tammy Bradt (#C-18), Tom Helfrich (#1), Donna Rost (#13) and Laurie Kass (#10).

Many of the drivers remarked about how much fun they had visiting the elementary school.
