Meetings/Seminars/Conferences attended by Duanesburg Board of Education
> The Canary in the Coal Mine or the
Elephant in the Room?: New York State's Approach to Funding High Need Schools on
Friday, Dec. 16, 2011
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by: The New York State School Boards Association and
The BOCES Educational Consortium.
What the conference is about: Our high need school districts are facing the dual
challenges of increasing expectations and diminishing resources. With hard
limits on state and local aid, how will low wealth districts continue to provide
a sound education for their students and usher in reforms? This high-level
summit will bring state leaders, financial and educational experts together with
representatives of challenged school districts. Together we'll lay out the true
impact of state and local revenue caps. We'll hear the state's plans for
educational and fiscal reform. Then together we'll craft a strategic action plan
to help districts through this most challenging of times. Top state officials
from the State Education Department and the governor's office, along with
attorney Michael Rebell of the Campaign for Educational Equity, will brief us on
where we stand and how tough it will be to get where we need to go. Then each of
us will contribute to a strategic action plan to help our high need districts
remain fiscally viable, educationally vibrant and a vital resource for their
students and their communities.
